Opening week for the Waldorf College Theatre Department’s first show You Can’t Take It With You is finally upon us.

The show centers on the eccentric Sycamore family and the havoc that ensues when daughter, Alice, invites her possible, mild-mannered in-laws to dinner. She is in search of their blessing but cannot be given it until they get past her dancing, writing, painting, snake owning, firework making explosion of a family.

Freshman Tori Cook, who plays Alice Sycamore, loves one of the messages that the show gives. “My favorite part of You Can’t Take It With You is the wholehearted love that the Sycamore family has for each other,” Cook said. “They all coexist together without disturbing each other’s happiness. Grandpa, as the head of the house, keeps them glued together and shows us real love.”

The show opens this Wednesday, Sept. 23 and runs until Saturday, Sept. 26. House will open at 7:00 p.m. and the lights come up at 7:30 p.m. with the cast ready to let the audience in on what they have been working on for the past five weeks.

I’m most excited for the audience to see the show and for them to truly understand the plot which is that no matter what may be going on in your life, family is always important. Money can’t buy happiness and that being different is okay,” sophomore Toney Wise said. Wise plays Paul Sycamore, the eccentric father to Alice.

The opening show has always been a wonderful introduction of new students into the theatre department, and this year has been no exception.

“My favorite part of being in this production is the sense of family that I get from my fellow cast and crew members,” Cook said. “We all are working to make a great show. I have been blown away by how supportive everyone is of one another and I feel like we are our own little version of the Sycamore family.”

Tickets for all nights are available at the theatre box office located in Voss Hall.
