Honors Day

By: Victoria Carra

Wednesday, April 5, 2017, Waldorf hosted their annual Honors Day event. This event is a chance for the school and donors to give scholarships to deserving students.

With there being 14 new scholarships this year many students were able to receive scholarships. Some scholarships had very specific requirements, based on the donor or the person the scholarship was named after. Some requirements included GPA and grade, while others were more specific such as where your hometown is.

Kennolson Collins received one of these very specific scholarships. “One of the requirements on my scholarship was to be a son of a pastor,” said Collins. “I thought that was kind of weird, but I am honored to be able to receive a scholarship today.”

Some scholarships were based on major as well. “I received a scholarship for being a science major,” said biology major Sydney Beasley.” I really like honors day, because it gives students a day to dress up and feel proud of our accomplishments.”

Students were chosen for these scholarships by staff and other faculty on campus. They looked for students that were working hard in their course work and had a financial need. Some students were able to meet their donors on Honors Day, but some donors were unable to attend the event. All of the students who received a scholarship on Honors Day are required to write and send a thank you letter to their donor.

The day is not just about students receiving scholarships; it also honors Alpha Chi members, and students who are not eligible for scholarships but have a 3.8 GPA or higher.

On Honors Day, they also announced who received Professor of the Year. The entire school had the chance to vote between five professors. The professor chosen this year was the chair of the communication department, David Damm.
