Ganzeveld Wins Spotlight Athlete of the Week

By: Cassidy Warson

After running an indoor school record in the 1,000-meter run, Nic Ganzeveld earned himself in the spotlight as the athlete of the week.

On Saturday, February 4, 2017, the Warriors track team raced at the Ted Nelson Classic in Mankato, Minnesota. The junior from Fort Dodge came in third place, running a time of 2 minutes and 33.87 seconds crushing his previous indoor school record by 9.82 seconds. Even though it was a great day for Ganzeveld in the 1,000, he fell slightly short at making the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national-qualifying B standard mark by seven hundredths of a second.

Even though Ganzeveld missed the mark in Mankato by that much, he managed to beat his time again on Saturday February 11, in Brookings, South Dakota at the two-day South Dakota State University Indoor Classic. Ganzeveld ran away with the sixth position, again running the 1,000-meter run with the time of 2 minutes and 32.15 seconds putting himself in position to go to the National Championships by hitting the national-qualifying B standard.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Ganzeveld said, “I haven’t missed Nationals since freshman year outdoor track. I want to keep the tradition going.”

Among other races that Ganzeveld has besides the 1,000-meter run, Ganzeveld is ranked third in the one-mile run with his best time being 4 minutes, 33.51 seconds. He also is ranked fourth in the 800-meter run with a best time of 1 minute, 59.19 seconds.

When he goes to Nationals, Ganzeveld said, “I’m gonna go out there and give it all I have to make finals.”

Ganzeveld and the Warriors return to racing this Saturday as they return to Brookings, South Dakota to compete in the NSAA Indoor Championships for the NSAA title, where he hopes to compete to make it to Tennessee, where Nationals will be held, in other running events.
