Deadpool: Marvel’s Edgiest Hero

Deadpool Review - Deadpool - Megan BrandrupBy Megan Brandrup

Marvel’s newest superhero, Deadpool, graced the big screen for the first time on February 12, 2016. The movie follows Wade Wilson, a modern day thug, and his transformation from a regular guy, to a mutant superhero. Actor, Ryan Reynolds plays Deadpool .

The story begins with a glorious fight scene between Deadpool, and a group of henchman and their leader, Ajax (or Francis, as Wade Wilson likes to call him). During this first scene, Deadpool breaks the first rule of cinema and breaks the fourth wall. He talks directly to the audience, and this theme stays consistent throughout the film.

The R rating for this film is definitely necessary. This film features a great deal of profanity, sexual content, and violence. However, all of this is needed to perfectly capture the personality and character of Wade Wilson (Deadpool.)

The best way to describe this movie is a raunchy, action-packed, romantic comedy. Wade Wilson’s main love interest, Vanessa, is played by Morena Baccarin. Deadpool’s deep love for Vanessa is evident throughout the entire film.

A majority of viewers really enjoyed the film. Waldorf student, Ryan Fischer, had this to say about Marvel’s newest film, “A lot of Deadpool fans were really worried that because Marvel is now owned by Disney, they would tone down the classic Deadpool character. I was pretty surprised that Disney would release an R-rated film. I was blown away with how well the character was portrayed. I loved the movie.”

Waldorf student, Lauren Babcock, said, “It was a really funny movie. I thought some of the jokes went too far at times, but overall, I loved all of the characters and I would definitely see it again.”

Rotten Tomato users also gave it positive reviews. Moviegoers gave the film a rating of 83 percent approval, saying that it was, “fresh and exciting.”

Not all reviewers were as quite as enthralled as the viewers were. Popular film critic, Brian Tallerico, only gave the film two stars, saying, “It’s a remarkably straightforward origin flick, lacking in true satire of its genre, carried almost entirely by its lead.”

I have to disagree with Mr. Tallerico however, I found the film to be extremely exciting and entertaining. I would most definitely see this movie again. This is not a family-friendly film, but it would be great for a grown-ups only date night. If you enjoy endless action, hilarious jokes, and a romantic love story, then this film is for you.
