FOREST CITY – The Waldorf College men’s golf team captured first place in Sunday’s Waldorf Invitational, turning in a score of 305 strokes at Bear Creek Golf Course.
“Going into the tournament, the guys were playing well,” Waldorf coach Mark Clouse said. “I fully expected them to do well.”
Hugo Becerra led the Warriors as the junior from Ocotlan, Mexico claimed first place with an even-par score of 71.
“He came in again with a great round,” Clouse said.
Waldorf senior Nick Boswell competed as an individual and tied for third with senior teammate Rick Young as they turned in 75-stroke totals.
“Having three guys in the top three is a really good day,” Clouse said.
Freshman Zabdiel Flores tied for sixth, carding a 79 for the Warriors. Kole Hallmark tied for ninth as the freshman shot an 80 to record Waldorf’s final team score.
“I know the team had winning their home invitational on their radar right from the beginning,” Clouse said. “They did the job.”
Junior Thomas O’Rourke tied for 17th with an 84 for the Warriors, senior Austin Heeren tied for 25th behind an 87 and junior Chad Hein tied for 30th with a 93.
Waldorf’s team score of 305 provided a nine-stroke advantage over NCAA Division III’s Iowa Wesleyan University (314). North Iowa Area Community College (326), Southwestern Community College (329), Hawkeye Community College (350), and Graceland University (356) completed the team standings.
The Warriors continue the fall season in the William Penn Classic at Oskaloosa, opening the two-day tournament next Sunday at 10 a.m.
“We’re trending very well,” Clouse said. “We’ll use this week to get prepared for the William Penn tournament and hopefully, we’ll have good results there too.”
