FORT MADISON – The Waldorf University women’s golf team put together a team score of 335 strokes to capture its third straight Tiger Classic title on Monday.
“Over the past few seasons, they’ve done quite well at this tournament,” Waldorf coach Mark Clouse said. “It’s one that they look forward to on the calendar. There’s some really good history at this tournament for the women.”
Three of the tournament’s top four performers represented the Warriors.
“There was really solid play throughout our lineup,” Clouse said.
Maggie Heinlein claimed second place as the senior from Jewell carded an 18-hole score of 80 on the par-72 layout at Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course.
Juniors Halle Hauer and Fernanda Valdes tied for third, behind scores of 81.
Heinlein, Hauer and Valdes were all within one stroke of each other.
“They were very, very consistent,” Clouse said. “They played very well the day before, so I’m not surprised they continued that into the next day.”
Junior Kailee Ward tied for 12th after shooting a 93 and turning in Waldorf’s final team score.
Sophomore Haley Lawrence competed as an individual and tied for 16th with a 98.
Waldorf sophomore Haleigh Biernacki tied for 20th after providing a 102.
Sophomore Mckenzie Fahrni competed as an individual and secured 23rd with a 110.
A different player has led the Warriors during each of their three tournaments this spring, providing a level of depth that allows them to be competitive each tournament.
“That’s a nice thing to have that consistent play throughout the lineup,” Clouse said. “You can definitely count on someone to step up and be the leader for that event. I look for that to continue throughout the spring.”
Waldorf beat out William Penn University’s B team by four strokes for the crown. William Penn’s B team (339) took second, NCAA Division III’s Illinois College (354) locked up third and NCAA Division III’s Iowa Wesleyan University (505) rounded out the team standings in fourth.
Brittany Evans represented William Penn’s B team and earned first with a 79.
The tournament field experienced a delay as a result of rain, but the teams were able to close out the tournament after the greens were cleared.
“The rain was kind of a nuisance, but we were able to get the complete tournament in,” Clouse said.
The Warriors return to action in the two-day Peru State Invitational, beginning on Sunday at 9 a.m. in Lincoln, Neb.
“It’s a new event on our schedule, so we’re looking forward to it,” Clouse said. “We’ll see some different schools that we haven’t typically faced. We’ve got about a week to prepare for the event, so it’ll be a good challenge for us.”
