FREMONT, Neb. – The Waldorf University cheerleading team put together strong performances during Wednesdays’ season-opening competitions.
“I am beyond proud of our team,” Waldorf coach Kalea Wilson said. “We have had to make so many changes late in the season due to injuries, but these ladies pulled everything together, gave 110 percent and put on an absolute show.”
Waldorf showcased its performance in back-to-back competitions, which included the Warrior Invitational and a dual-meet matchup against Briar Cliff University.
“Performing a full routine twice within 15 minutes is extremely difficult to do, but the girls were ready to go again with such positive mindsets,” Wilson said.
In the Warrior Invitational, Waldorf placed third with 63.20 points. Briar Cliff University claimed first with 65.25 points and Midland University secured second with 64.95 points.
“Competing in itself is a major accomplishment for our squad, but to have been within one point from second place and two points away from first place proves that we are heading in the right direction,” Wilson said.
Briar Cliff topped Waldorf in a dual as the Chargers scored 66.65 points and the Warriors netted 61.75 points.
During both competitions, Waldorf received its best skill categories’ scores from the judges in the partner stunts/group stunts and jumps. The Warriors earned consistent scores in choreography, showmanship/general impression, overall execution and overall difficulty.
“This competition was such a great experience and learning lesson for us,” Wilson said. “We are taking all of the feedback that we received and getting straight to work.”
Junior Tyra Brown, sophomores Victoria Carra, Danielle Waite, Sydney Beasley, Bailey Waldhauser, Kirsten DeVary, freshmen Megan Cronkwright, Porche Green and Janice Conlon represented the Warriors in the competitions. Sophomore Madison Stenersen, who was sidelined by injury, also made the trip to support her teammates.
Waldorf concludes the season on Feb. 26 when the Warriors host Ellsworth Community College in a 3 p.m. dual at Hanson Fieldhouse.
The 2017 campaign marks Waldorf’s first year of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) competition. The Warriors will be eligible for the postseason next year.
“I think the competition created a bond between the team that cannot be broken,” Wilson said. “I am so excited for these girls to have the option to go to the postseason next year. They have the dedication it takes to go all the way and we definitely won’t stop until we get there.”
