Waldorf’s Budgins named NSAA Attacker of the Week

FOREST CITY – Waldorf University volleyball player Kayla Budgins was named the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Attacker of the Week.

Budgins, who was announced as the conference’s Attacker of the Week on Monday, tied Waldorf’s school record for the most kills in a three-set match as she smashed 18 kills to help the Warriors (4-5) sweep Sterling College (4-5) by scores of 25-13, 25-15, 25-19 during the Country Inn & Suites Invitational this past Saturday at Forest City.

Waldorf won three of five matches in its two-day home tournament. Budgins recorded double-digit kill totals in the first four matches of the tournament and finished the weekend with 65 kills and a .359 hitting percentage. She also had six blocks (3 solo), seven service aces and 11 digs in the five matches.

Budgins racked up 15 kills and a pair of solo blocks in the tournament opener, which Central Methodist University (10-2) won 25-27, 25-18, 25-17, 25-19 on Friday. She provided 12 kills and two aces as NCAA Division II’s Minnesota State University-Moorhead (3-1) escaped with a five-set win over Waldorf by scores of 25-18, 25-19, 24-26, 22-25, 15-8. Budgins tallied 11 kills, four aces, a solo block and block assist while turning in a .500 hitting percentage and leading the Warriors to a 25-14, 25-22, 25-13 win over William Penn University (1-8) on Friday.

Waldorf won its final two matches on Saturday, capping the tournament with a 25-21, 15-25, 25-18, 25-22 victory over Mount Mercy University (7-3). In the team’s third consecutive win, Budgins connected for nine kills.

Budgins leads the Warriors with 105 kills, a .349 hitting percentage and is averaging 3.18 kills per set this season. The 6-foot sophomore middle hitter from Germantown, Wisconsin also ranks first on the team in total blocks (16) and aces (14).

Waldorf faces Mount Mercy once again on Tuesday in a 7:30 p.m. matchup at Cedar Rapids.

The Warriors compete in this weekend’s College of Saint Mary Tournament. They take on Morningside College (5-1) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Peru State College (11-2) at 8:30 p.m. Waldorf concludes the tournament on Saturday, playing Grace University (3-4) at 10:30 a.m. and Mount Marty College (2-3) at 2:30 p.m.
