Waldorf Women’s Basketball Off to Best Start Since 2012
By: Joseph Halverson
Waldorf Women’s Basketball is sitting at a 5-4 record to start the 2021-2022 season. This is the first time the Warriors have had a winning record since the 2018-2019 season.
Waldorf Women’s Basketball team is sitting over .500 to start the season. After a victory against Grinnell (at Grinnell College), the team has a winning record entering conference play. The team has been led by senior Tina Lair-VanMeter, averaging 14.9 points per game.
Last season, Waldorf Women’s Basketball finished with a record of 1-19 and were eliminated from the playoffs after a loss of 47-74 against Bellevue University in the playoffs.
This is also Waldorf’s fourth win in a row after dropping four of their first five games. This is Waldorf’s best record heading into conference play since the 2012-2013 season.
Senior guard, Kinsey Tweedy, attributes their success to better chemistry.
“This team has been much closer off the court than we have been in past years,” Tweedy said. “We hangout a lot off the court and we all get along as well. I think the bonds we’re building will definitely help us along the road as we enter conference play.”
Tweedy was part of the team in 2018-2019. This was the last women’s team at Waldorf to finish the season with a winning record.
“In [the 2018-2019 season], we were really close and I think that is what helped us win so many games,” Tweedy said. “Were starting to find that groove again and win games. It isn’t just the bonding either. We practice hard and we compete every day. If we can keep this up through conference play then we can make a playoff run.”
Waldorf opens up conference play Wednesday, Dec. 1 against Iowa Wesleyan in Forest City, Iowa. Waldorf’s four games in December will all be held in Forest City.
