Waldorf Softball Struggles in Season Openers
By Damon Helgevold
Waldorf Warrior softball got off to a slow start in their first action of the season last weekend. The Warriors(1-5) got off to a slow start as they dropped all three games on opening day of the Aberdeen Dome Tournament in Aberdeen, South Dakota. On Sunday the Warriors etched one in the win column during their last game of the day.
Saturday was a struggle as the Warriors dropped all three games by scores of 5-3 against Presentation, dropped game two by a score of 11-6 to Dakota Wesleyan, and ended the day with a 6-1 loss versus Jamestown.
First year Head Coach Lexy Determan said it’s always good to get the first games under your belt but now it’s time to get to work.
“Last weekend was a great learning experience for us. It’s always great to get on the field, as that is where you learn what you really need to work on,” Determan said.
Sunday the Warriors came back and played three hard fought games. Losses coming by scores of 11-3 versus Dakota Wesleyan and 3-1 against Jamestown. Waldorf in the third game found the win column and took down Minnesota-Crookston by score of 3-2.
Determan was pleased but she knows they will have to improve to get where they want to be this spring.
“We really need to focus on keeping momentum when we have it,” Determan said. “We make big plays on defense or have a big hit on offense, and then we settle back into a comfort zone and make a couple mistakes and let the other team back in.”
Determan is entering her first season as the head coach of the Warriors.
“I do feel some pressure in my first year here, as this is a program with a strong history of success,” Determan said. “It is also a challenge to work with a team that you did not recruit just because their expectations were likely to play their career with the coach that recruited them.”
The Warriors will look to rebound during their Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach and find ways to bring home a couple of victories before the home season kicks off March 25 versus conference for Mayville State.
