Waldorf holds third after opening round of NSAA Championships

ALBERT LEA, Minn. – The Waldorf University women’s golf team holds third place following the opening round of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Championships on Monday.
Bellevue University, ranked No. 10 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) preseason poll, owns first place with an 18-hole score of 335 strokes. Viterbo University (344) sits nine strokes back in second place. Waldorf (353) is in third while the University of Jamestown (363), Valley City State University (403), Dickinson State University (430) and Presentation College (819) complete the team standings.
Junior Fernanda Valdes leads the Warriors, currently in fourth after firing an 83-stroke total on the par-72 layout at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club.
Waldorf senior Maggie Peters is tied for 10th, shooting an 88 during the opening round. Juniors Halle Hauer and Kailee Ward are tied for 14th behind 91-stroke outings while sophomore Haleigh Biernacki is in 21st with a 99.
Bellevue’s Faustina Peve leads the field in first with an 80 and Bellevue’s Ivane Helias is in second with an 81. Jamestown’s Annie Nelson is currently in third with an 82, just one stroke ahead of Valdes. Viterbo’s Danielle Ducklow rounds out the top five after carding an 84.
Waldorf begins the second round of the cumulative 72-hole tournament on Tuesday at 10 a.m. In April, the third and fourth rounds will be completed. The conference team champion and top individual finisher advance to the NAIA National Championships.
