Waldorf draws with Jamestown in NSAA battle

JAMESTOWN, North Dakota – In a defensive battle, the Waldorf University men’s soccer team ended in a 1-1 double-overtime draw with the University of Jamestown during Saturday’s North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) match.
Erik Soares scored the lone goal for the Warriors (10-4-1, 1-0-1). Following a scoreless first half, the junior midfielder from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil lifted Waldorf in front as he scored unassisted in the 62nd minute.
Charlie Foster delivered the equalizer for the Jimmies (6-8-2, 0-1-1) with 2 minutes, 23 seconds remaining in regulation.
The Warriors owned an 8-7 edge in shots. Jamestown attempted one shot in the first overtime period, and Waldorf outshot the Jimmies by a 3-1 margin in the final overtime.
Humberto Figueroa finished with two saves for the Warriors while facing three shots. The sophomore goalkeeper from Santa Maria, California broke the school record for consecutive shutout minutes, holding opponents scoreless for 276:54 to bring down the previous mark of 204:02 set by Alejandro Olmos in 2013.
Jamestown’s Jake Askew tallied one save against two shots.
Soares and senior Brian Shariffi fired one shot apiece to register Waldorf’s only shots on goal. Junior Riley Gibson, sophomores Rodrigo Frietas, Cameron Saul, Yan Arruda Caires, freshmen Jacob Harris and Widler Monestime also attempted shots.
The Warriors added to their single-season school records for goals (55) and overtime matches (5) in the draw.
Waldorf continues NSAA play on Wednesday, hosting Viterbo University (4-8, 1-1) in a 7 p.m. matchup at Bolstorff Field.
