Waldorf crushes Augustana, matches team goals record

ALBERT LEA, Minnesota – The Waldorf University hockey team closed out its series with Augustana College with a record-setting 13-0 victory on Saturday.
Waldorf (8-2) entered the match ranked No. 8 in the latest American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division II Central Region poll. The Warriors tied the single-match school record 13 goals after establishing the mark a night earlier. Waldorf’s 13-goal margin of victory bested Friday’s 12-goal win over the Vikings (0-6).
Fifteen players provided points for the Warriors. Senior Jess Engquist turned in a hat trick. Juniors Matthew Liggett and Jeffrey Bartel put together two-goal performances. Seniors Reed Loucks, Jacob Bales, juniors Drew Soderberg, Buddy Napier, sophomore Cameron Batchelor and freshman Eric Long each scored goals.
Senior Alex Fleming contributed five assists. Loucks, sophomore Ryan Veillet and freshman Tyler Wilson dished two assists apiece. The Warriors also received assists from Engquist, Soderberg, Napier, Long, seniors Artem Savelyev, Jake Taylor and freshman Jason Roeske.
Junior Bruno Novotny compiled a 16-save shutout.
Augustana goalkeeper David Volkmann saved 77 of the 90 shots he faced.
Waldorf outshot Augustana by a 90-16 margin.
The Warriors took a 2-0 lead after the first period, behind goals from Batchelor and Bales.
Engquist contributed two goals during the second period. Waldorf also received scores from Bartel, Liggett, Napier, Soderberg and Loucks, pulling ahead to a 9-0 advantage.
Liggett, Long, Bartel and Engquist produced goals for the Warriors during the third period.
Waldorf squares off with Illinois State University (5-8) during next weekend’s nonconference series at Albert Lea City Areana. The two teams are scheduled to battle on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 2 p.m.
