Top ten dorm-friendly recipes
By Preston Landon
Living away from home can be a very new and different experience for many students. Some people have never had to cook for themselves, and it can be a very arduous task if you aren’t prepared to do so. Fortunately, there are some meals that are extremely quick to prepare, without any hassle at all. We have created a list of our top 10 dorm-friendly recipes that will help you and your stomach get through the year away from home, as well as save you some time and money.
10. Oatmeal
My favorite brand is Quaker. They have a bunch of different flavors and a packet only takes a little added water and one minute to microwave.
9. Malt-O-Meal
Malt-O-Meal is old school, but gets the job done. It’s sort of like oatmeal, but different. Add ¼ cup of Malt-O-Meal, 1 cup of water, and microwave for a minute. Then take it out to stir, put it back in for another 30 seconds. I recommend adding a touch of milk and sugar.
8. Cereal
Cereal is great no matter where you live. Pour up a bowl of your favorite breakfast cereal and add milk as desired. Ta-da!
7. Cheese Quesadilla
Use whatever type of tortilla you like, put some cheese in it, and fold it in half! Then microwave for 30 seconds. If you’re feeling fancy, throw in some sandwich meat.
6. Eggs
For poached-like eggs, simply crack the eggs in a bowl and microwave for 1 to 1 ½ minutes. For scrambled eggs, crack and whisk the eggs in a bowl and microwave for about the same amount of time.
5. Nachos
Simple, easy, and quick. Put shredded or sliced cheese on top of a pile of tortilla chips (I prefer Doritos, and multiple layers of cheese). Microwave for 20-40 seconds, depending on the strength of your microwave.
4. Baked Potato
Poke a few holes in a potato and microwave it for a few minutes depending on the size of the potato. Or, if your microwave has one, just use the “baked potato” button. Add butter, sour cream, and seasoning to your liking.
3. Pita Sandwich
Toss some different types of vegetables with lettuce, cheese, your choice of meat, and sauce into pita bread and have a blast.
2. Easy Mac
A microwavable legend. Easy mac is as tasty and stomach warming as it is simple.
1. Top Ramen
In a category all its own, Top Ramen is easily the number one dorm friendly recipe. There are hundreds of different sauces and spices that can be used to create a delicious and quick bowl of ramen, which only takes 3 minutes in the microwave with water. There is literally an entire cookbook about different recipes using ramen.
College life can be a very difficult adjustment. There’s no reason to make the adjustment more difficult than it has to be. Enjoy some down time with a warm snack.
