With the recent arctic blast hitting much of the United States and the midwest specifically, it is never a bad time to get a refresher on the best ways to stay warm.

Frostbite is no joke, so be sure to read on for some helpful tips to avoid any injuries from the cold. Here are the five best ways to stay warm this winter.

  1. Layer up: When it comes to the cold, one can never have too many layers. The better insulated the core organs are kept, the warmer the body will feel and insure sure one does not get frostbite or sick!
  2. Bring Extras: People never know when they will need something. The cold causes their vehicles to act up, and it is always better to have something and not need it than to need something and not have it.
  3. Fuel Your Body: Keeping one’s body well-fed will help their body have energy to keep its body temperature up. If they do not have any food in their stomach, their body will not have access to the carbohydrates it needs to have energy.
  4. Stay Hydrated: Even in cold weather, one can easily become dehydrated. The body burns calories at a higher rate in the cold than in the heat of summer, so it is important to stay well-hydrated.
  5. Cover vulnerable areas: The wrist, ankle and neck are some of the most vulnerable places on the human body. The body has many blood vessels and nerves close to the skin without much cushion over them, so it is important to wear gloves, scarfs, and thick socks to protect these vulnerable areas.
