On August 26th, 2017 at 12 a.m. eastern time, the showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Connor McGregor was underway.
The two fighters both looked poised for a win. Surrounding the ring were some of the most famous and influential people in the world were there in Las Vegas, ready to see what the conclusion of the boxing match would be. With an aging superstar like Mayweather and a rising young MMA champion facing off, no one knew who would win, but for the skeptics who doubted the 40 year old Mayweather and the 26 year old McGregor were both in for a surprise.
Although many analysts predicted Mayweather to easily win the match, the first two rounds indicated otherwise. McGregor came out ready to compete with Mayweather winning the first two rounds of the fight in an aggressive fashion landing big punches on Mayweather. In round three, Mayweather found his stride and started operating as he has done many times before, counter punching the aggressive McGregor. By rounds four and five the pace of the fight quickens and McGregor seemed to get winded as Mayweather seemed to gain energy.
Through rounds six and seven, Mayweather’s stamina and skills took over landing blows to McGregor and continually stalking him down and although McGregor was tiring, he was still hanging in the fight landing marginal punches, but just enough to keep him in the fight. In rounds eight and nine it was clear who the undefeated professional boxer in the ring was as Mayweather seemed to be looking for a knockout against McGregor landing punch after punch and getting the crowd on their feet. As round 10 rolls around McGregor was still standing but was looking very weary. Floyd continued to attack with precision and accuracy. At this point in the match, McGregor had slowed all the way down and was not even throwing punches back as Mayweather was continually hitting him looking for the knock out. In the middle of round 10, after a fury of punches from Mayweather the match was officially called a technical knockout by the referee as McGregor could not seem to find any energy left to throw another punch back at Mayweather.
After the fight was over, Mayweather took to the podium and spoke on McGregor. “He’s a lot better than I thought he was. He used different angles. He was a tough competitor. But I was the better man tonight,” Mayweather said. McGregor was also interviewed after the fight and said, “I thought it was a little early of a stoppage”. McGregor indicated that he wanted the fight to go on longer, but in the end he gave no impression that he could continue fighting. Mayweather won the fight and added another win to his 49 – 0 record, giving him 50 wins without a loss in his illustrious career and after, officially announcing his retirement from the sport of boxing.
