Indoor to Outdoor: What can We Expect?
By Hannah Wagner
With the Waldorf indoor track season wrapping up on Mar. 7 with the NAIA Indoor Nationals, the outdoor season is promptly approaching. Apr. 4 will be the first outdoor meet, taking place at Wartburg College.
This indoor season had an abundance of highlights, including a few athletes qualifying for nationals.
“We saw a lot of lifetime best performances from many of the athletes this year,” Anthony Green, women and men’s head coach, said.
Damarre Martin qualified for nationals in the 400m dash with a time of 49.20, along with his teammate, Zach Morel, in the heptathlon with a score of 4,417.
On March 5-6, Morel will compete for a shot at becoming an All-American. Martin will compete alongside him with the goal of making finals and running again to also become an All-American.
With immense highlights this indoor season, Coach Green believes the outdoor season will be even more successful.
“Seeing how well all of our athletes performed at the indoor conference meet, it really got me excited for the potential in outdoor,” Green said. “We had 16 All-Conference Performances between the men and women, so we are looking for at least 20 when we get outdoors,” he said.
Kaila Jackson, short sprinter and long jumper, is looking forward to outdoor season as well.
“I am really looking forward to transitioning from the 60m to the 100m,” Jackson said. “Our team usually goes to Drake Relays for outdoor, which is also super fun.” she said.
Waldorf will host the outdoor conference meet on the week of finals and graduation, allowing for an expected strong fan base and a final celebration of the year for the students and faculty that are still around campus.
“I am looking forward to even more national qualifiers from the marathon to any of the field events,” said Green. “We have an opportunity to send a number of athletes down to the Gulf Shores for the National Meet at the end of May.”
