Giving blood could make you a hero

It’s the most wonderful time of the year- a time to give blood and save lives. Waldorf College will be hosting the American Red Cross blood drive on Wednesday, February 10. Nurse Mary Mathiasen, Waldorf’s director of student health services, hopes to earn a goal of 50 units from this blood drive.
“Last semester, we didn’t reach our goal,” said Mathiasen. “Probably because a majority of students had busy schedules or sports practice. I hope this semester we will reach our goal and more students can donate.”
There is an important change to this seasons blood drive; it will be held in the Campus Center lounge instead of the Atrium this year. Mathiasen said due to conflicting schedules, they had to move the blood drive to a different location.
“Keep an eye on your email,” said Mathiasen. “There will be a notification soon, I promise. We are trying to figure out something because this blood drive is an important event.”
A relocation will not stop Waldorf sophomore Noah Johnson from donating blood. This will be his 10th time in over five years giving blood.
“It has a special meaning to me,” said Johnson. “I have had family members who have battled cancer. Plus I think of my dad and my brothers, who own motorcycles. If they ever got into an accident, my blood could save their lives.”
Johnson is not sure if he will give a double or single donation, but he is looking forward to knowing his blood could save three lives.
“Giving blood to save someone’s life is a good feeling,” said Johnson.
Giving blood is something you can spare or if you cannot donate, volunteering to help during the day is always an option. It is easy and convenient. So take the time and make sure you donate at Waldorf ’s blood drive on February 10.
And yes, there will be juice and cookies.
