On Thursday, Sept. 8, The entire communications department headed down to the local Super bowl, for the annual bowling night.

The teams were split up a few weeks prior to the event, with two captains on each team. The teams had to make up a theme to dress up as for the night, some went as hippies, others as ninjas, etc. It was a night for the new students to get to know people with the same major, but in a fun and light hearted way.

Each team got a chance to win prizes for things like, best team name and best costumes and of course for best and worst scores. There was some controversy when student and Waldorf Bowling team member Nick Heimerman won best score overall, but it was all fun and games. The teams were judged by a couple non-communications faculty, Sharese Hall being one of them, ” It was great to see how much effort the students put into their costumes. And the energy from the teams were contagious!”

Stross Newcom, senior at Waldorf, was very happy that his last comm bowling night was a success saying, ” It was the greatest last comm bowling ever, I am graduating in May and am glad to have ended it this way.” Stross was one of the captains for the team Neon Extravaganza, who won best team name.

Erisha Leann said,” I liked that it wasn’t about winning or competition at all, it is all about team spirit and bonding among students.” This was a great experience to get to know other students that some wouldn’t usually talk to.

Within the communications department there are four practicums: WalTV, KZOW 91.9 (Radio), The Lobbyist (Newspaper), and The Torch (Magazine), so it is very easy for students to seclude themselves to just one group, but with activities like this it keeps the department together.
