Former basketball players playing abroad
With former Warrior basketball players Karl Dehesa, Kenan Biberovic, and Lorenzo Griffin recently joining former teammate Kelly Berry in the ranks of professional basketball, Waldorf College now has four former players playing basketball professionally overseas.
Biberovic, Griffin, Dehesa, and Berry were all teammates on the 2008-2009 Waldorf team, and then Biberovic, Griffin, and Dehesa played together the next season as seniors.
Biberovic and Griffin both play in Germany, for TSV 1880 Wasserburg. Biberovic’s journey to professional basketball, however, was not exactly scripted. “I didn’t play much basketball for two years after Waldorf,” said Biberovic, a 6’2” forward. “This past summer though, I worked out and went to Croatia to play in a summer league. I stayed in Europe with family, got in touch with a lot of teams, and by August 20, I found myself on a team with a nice deal for my first pro-career.”
Berry plays for the Meralco Bolts, a team from the Philippines. Joining him abroad in the Phillipines is 6’2” guard Dehesa, who suits up for the Alaska Aces. Dehesa’s professional career came about as a result of some friends of his convincing him to play after college. “I had a few friends that played in the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) during the time I was trying to come out and play,” said Dehesa. “They told me once I finished school to come out here and play. They hooked me up with my agent, who basically took care of everything and secured a tryout/place for me.” Dehesa played a key part on his Aces team that won 3 championships in a row his first year playing, and has had a solid career up to this point in time.
Biberovic and Dehesa both agreed that Waldorf was a great place for their college careers to unfold. “I was in the communications department,” said Biberovic. “The staff was amazing. I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. I also liked Waldorf because it was in a small town, unlike Los Angeles (where I live), so I was able to focus on my academics.”
Dehesa also agreed that his experience at Waldorf was a good one. “I met very nice and welcoming people. My teammates were fun to be around, which made playing on the court with them fun as well,” said Dehesa. “My teachers were great too. They were always there to help if I was having trouble with my classes. I definitely have made some life long friends and I would not trade my experience for anything.”
