Waldorf pitcher ends weekend with no-no

Waldorf’s Sam Jones threw a no-hitter this past Sunday at the end of the four-game series against Dakota State, leading to a 3-0 Warriors win.

The junior Australian struck out seven batters while surrendering zero hits, but the Trojans did manage a base runner in each inning except one.

Dakota State won the previous three games of the series, and Jones knew he had to pitch a great game to try and salvage one game from the series with the Trojans.

The Warriors gave up too many runs in the first three games of the weekend, losing each game 23-13, 8-7 and 16-11. With Jones pitching a gem, the Waldorf offense had to provide some help to win the game.

Freshman Grand View transfer Easton Barrus scored the first run after he doubled and scored on stolen base attempt by Dusty Rogers.

“Sam pitched a great game, so the guys were just trying to get him some run support so we didn’t waste the game,” said Barrus, a Belmond, Iowa native.

The Warriors scored two more runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning off of a wild pitch and an RBI single by Josh Hook, reaching the final score of 3-0.

Although Waldorf lost the series 3-1, the no-hitter in the final game can hopefully be a momentum shift for the team, who plays two conference opponents this week.

“Each conference game is a big one, so we need to get it going here if we want to make a run,” said senior infielder Jack Muhleck. “This win could really spark us going into our games this next week.”

The Warriors play Viterbo in doubleheader action on Tuesday, April 6th, and they play at Presentation College in a four game series this weekend on April 10 and 11.
