Warriors Baseball and Softball Playing Best Ball of Year
By Zach Throne
The Waldorf baseball and softball programs have been red hot in the past couple weeks.
Prior to the 10-9 defeat in the back half of a doubleheader against conference opponent Viterbo, the Warrior baseball team had won 12 straight games over the course of three weeks.
Their current record sits at 19-13 with a conference record of 9-1, which puts them in second place in the North Star Athletic Association race. They sit behind Bellevue (13-1), receiving votes in the national rankings,
It has not just been the baseball team playing its best ball of the year. The women of Waldorf softball have put together their own run: winning seven of their last ten games.
The Warrior women sit in fourth place in the NSAA standings, placed behind Valley City State (ranked 8th), Bellevue (receiving votes), and Mayville State (who Waldorf baseball and softball play in a four-game series this weekend).
The baseball program’s 12-game winning streak included four one-run wins, three ten-run rules and a no-hitter from Mac Pearson. Talk about an eventful stretch of games for the Warriors!
“We are so together right now, and it is really showing out on the diamond as of late,” said baseball catcher Kevin Tapia. “Hopefully we can keep up the strong play for the rest of the year.”
Lauren Hein of the softball team earned NSAA Softball Player of the Week for the second week in a row.
She posted impressive numbers like hitting 8-for-13 (16-27 during the two weeks), driving in seven runs, hitting a grand slam and stealing two bases.
“Lauren has been killing the ball lately,” said infielder Blaney Markman, “She has fully deserved the two player of the week awards, and we have several other girls that have been playing really well along with her.”
The women go to Mayville, North Dakota this weekend to take on the Comets in a four-game series.
The men also face Mayville State in four games, but they play at home.
