Top 10 Movies on Netflix
By: Jaci Olson
Netflix has added many new titles in 2017. There are also a few oldies but goodies still available to watch. Here are my top movies on Netflix in order of least favorite to most favorite.
10. Bridget Jones Diary
Bridget Jones is a super easy character to relate to. This movie is loosely based on the romantic, Pride and Prejudice. From the opening credits, Bridget is singing along to “All by Myself” by herself in her pajamas. We know that she is going to find someone who will love her as much as we do. With characters such as Mr. Darcy, this movie is one anyone can enjoy.
9. One Day
My sister texted me and asked if I had seen this movie on Netflix. I responded that I hadn’t and she said that I should watch it immediately. I didn’t know what to expect, but this movie is a tear-jerking lovable one. It follows Dexter and Emma chronologically reconnecting on the day July 14 over the next 18 years after they go their separate ways. Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway are great in this film.
8. To Kill A Mockingbird
This movie is based on the novel by Harper Lee published in 1960. It follows the small town life of a Southern town and the childhood of a young girl names Scout who learns many things about her town and the people in it. It teaches the valuable lesson that you will never know someone until you walk in his shoes.
7. 10 Things I Hate About You
10 Things I Hate About You is a 1999 romantic comedy based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew retold in an American high school setting. In the movie, new student Cameron is smitten with Bianca and in order to get around her father’s strict rules on dating, attempts to get bad boy Patrick to date Bianca’s ill-tempered sister, Kat. The film is titled after a poem written by Kat about her bittersweet romance with Patrick. This movie shows a breakthrough role for Heath Ledger. It is a movie for everyone to enjoy.
6. Magic Mike
Magic Mike is incredibly entertaining but also funny and a little dark in some places. This movie shows the backstage of male strip clubs. Channing Tatum is great in the lead role here and shows the side of himself that has made him a very talented actor. Matthew McConaughey is also truly talented and this is one of his best performances. Magic Mike is more than just strip routines, it is comedy, romance and melodrama that tells a story.
5. The Princess Bride
This movie is a witty, modern fairy tale told by a grandfather to his sick grandson. It follows Buttercup, a princess and the brave hero, Westley who is her farm boy until she realizes she loves him. When she is kidnapped by an evil prince, he then must rescue her from the evil villain. They must overcome many obstacles and adventures to be able to call each other their love.
4. Grease
I have been watching Grease since I was little, not really understanding the adult humor. This movie has all the typical teenage high school drama but is also a musical. It is a romance and has some really catchy musical numbers. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John are terrific together, but the entire cast really sells the movie. It tells the great message that you don’t need to change yourself for someone to like you.
3. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
It is easy to forget how good this movie really is. It’s a classic and more than just a story about an alien. It is a movie filled with imagination and adventure but also touches on the realities of a broken family. If you want a movie that is magical, watch E.T.
2. Pirates of the Caribbean
Pirates of the Caribbean is about the witty pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow and how he teams up with blacksmith Will Turner to save the love of his Will’s life, Elizabeth Swan. Their journey is filled with humor, action, and betrayal but they realize that you can in fact, trust some pirates.
1. Footloose
I have been watching Footloose since I was little, as well. I love the story and the soundtrack for the movie is phenomenal. It tells the story of Ren MacCormack, a teenager from the city who just moved to a small town where dancing is illegal. He realizes he needs to make a difference and does just that. I might be a bit biased, because it is my favorite movie of all time and just happens to be on Netflix.
So there you have my top 10 movies that are available on Netflix. Get watching!
