Waldorf coasts past No. 17 Iowa in second straight sweep

ALBERT LEA, Minnesota – The Waldorf University hockey team coasted to a 7-2 victory over No. 17 University of Iowa on Saturday, completing its second straight sweep.
Waldorf (4-0) entered the match ranked No. 8 in the latest American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division II Central Region poll. Ten Warriors contributed at least one point in their win over the No. 17 Hawkeyes (2-2).
Junior Matthew Liggett delivered two goals for the Warriors. Seniors Jacob Bales, Spencer Johnson, junior Drew Soderberg, sophomore Ryan Veillet and freshman Tyler Wilson also added goals.
Johnson provided three assists while Veillet, Soderberg and junior Jeffrey Bartel dished out two assists a piece.
Jonathan Losurdo netted two goals for Iowa.
Waldorf outshot the Hawkeyes by a 56-20 margin.
Junior Dustin Stevens rejected 18 of the 20 shots he faced. Iowa goalkeeper Joe Herrmann collected 49 saves against 56 shots.
Liggett put the Warriors on the board eight minutes into the first period when Wilson and Veillet set him up for the score. During the 18th minute of the first period, Veillet connected for a score to give Waldorf a two-goal advantage. Johnson and Soderberg were credited with assists.
The Warriors took a 3-0 lead when Soderberg produced a score eight minutes into the second period. Johnson, and senior Jake Taylor provided assists on the score. During the 13th minute of the second period, Wilson scored a power-play goal to give Waldorf a four-goal lead. Veillet and Johnson dished out assists on the score. Liggett put the Warriors ahead 5-0 with 27 seconds remaining in the second period. Bartel and senior Artem Savelyev tallied assists on the goal.
Waldorf went up 6-0 during the 10th minute of the third period when Bales capitalized off passes from Bartel and senior Reed Loucks. During the 12th minute of the third period, Johnson scored off an assist from Soderberg to give the Warriors a seven-goal advantage.
During the 15th minute of the third period, Losurdo put the Hawkeyes on the board off assists from Devin Decker and Will Unterseher. Losurdo delievered a power-play score a minute later with Nathan Podraza and Ben Brandau on the assists.
The Warriors host No. 7 DePaul University for a weekend series at Albert Lea, Minnesota. Waldorf and the Blue Demons face off for a Saturday 7:30 p.m. matchup and conclude the series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
