Warriors power past No. 17 Hawkeyes in home opener

ALBERT LEA, Minnesota – Jeffrey Bartel delivered two goals to help lead the Waldorf University hockey team to a 3-1 victory over the University of Iowa during Friday’s home opener.

The Warriors (3-0) entered the night ranked No. 8 in the latest American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division II Central Region poll and trailed the No. 17 Hawkeyes (2-1) at the end of the first period.

Bartel scored both goals in the second period, and junior Matthew Liggett also added a goal later in the period.

“After a slow start, we started to find our game in the second,” Waldorf coach Brett Shelanski said. “We were able to score early in the period, gained confidence and settled in from there.”

Iowa’s Ben Brandau turned in the first goal of the night in the fifth minute off an assist from Nathan Podraza.

Bartel notched the equalizer, converting on a power play five minutes into the second period. Seniors Jake Taylor and Artem Savelyev contributed assists on the score.

Less than three minutes later, Bartel struck again as the junior defenseman from Steinbach, Manitoba netted the game-winning goal off an assist from senior Jess Engquist.

Liggett scored in the 12th minute of the third period to push Waldorf to a two-goal advantage. Freshman Tyler Wilson and sophomore Ryan Veillet were credited with assists.

The Warriors outshot the Hawkeyes by a 47-30 advantage.

Waldorf junior goaltender Dustin Stevens recorded 29 saves while facing 30 shots in the win. Iowa’s Jacob Stack finished with 44 saves against 47 shots.

The Warriors were strong on the penalty kill, shutting down the Hawkeyes as they come up empty on all six of their power plays. Solid play down the stretch aided Waldorf, and minimizing penalties will be on the Warriors’ agenda when the two teams close out the series on Saturday, starting at 2 p.m.

“We played well in the third to finish off the win,” Shelanski said. “We took some penalties that could have hurt us, and we will have to eliminate those moving forward, but our penalty kill did a great job keeping their power play off the board.”
