Waldorf scores shutout win over Bacone

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas – Coming out on top in convincing fashion once again, the Waldorf University men’s soccer team scored its second consecutive win with a 3-0 victory over Bacone College on Thursday.

“It was great to get our first away win of the season, especially after having only one day to recover between games,” Waldorf coach Michael Wilson said. “The boys showed a lot of character and had to defend well against a very directly physical Bacone team.”

Waldorf (2-1) has outscored its opponents by a combined 9-1 margin in the past two contests. Two days after having four different players notch goals, the Warriors once again had a supporting cast lead the charge. Jean Bonnin, juniors Riley Gibson and Jose Rincon delivered goals to power Waldorf’s offense in the shutout win.

“We created goals by applying good pressure in moments that surprised the Bacone defense,” Wilson said.

Waldorf goalkeeper Humberto Figueroa recorded six saves, stopping one shot in the first half and collecting five more saves during the second half.

It was another strong attack for Waldorf, which outshot Bacone 15-11. Eight of Waldorf’s shots were on goal and Bacone finished with five shots on target.

Two first-half goals put Waldorf in the driver’s seat.

Bonnin struck first, connecting for a goal four minutes into the match. It was the third goal of the week for the junior midfielder from Verneuil-sur-Seine, France.

Gibson pushed Waldorf to a two-goal advantage in the 20th minute courtesy of an assist from junior Robert Serrano.

Putting the contest out of reach, Rincon delivered the final dagger as he found the back of the net during the closing minute of play.

Waldorf returns home to host Nebraska Wesleyan University (0-0) on Sunday in a 5 p.m. kickoff. The match marks the first-ever meeting between the Warriors and the Prairie Wolves, who are NCAA Division III members.
