FOREST CITY – Viterbo University came out firing from the start en route to a 4-0 win over the Waldorf College women’s soccer team during Wednesday’s North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) opener.
Molly Machometa notched a pair of goals to key the V-Hawks (5-7, 1-0) in their third straight victory.
Katie Bares converted on a penalty kick to put Viterbo in front 10 minutes into the contest. Machometa scored on a breakaway two minutes later, following an assist from Cait Michicich to help boost the V-Hawks a two-goal advantage in the opening half.
The Warriors (2-9, 0-1) looked to turn the tide in the second half, but Viterbo never slowed its attack. Maria Michels provided a goal for the V-Hawks in the 57th minute off an assist from Bares.
Machometa added her second goal of the night with less than 12 minutes remaining in the match while Bares contributed the assist. Bares and Machometa generated four points apiece.
Waldorf junior Charlotte Madrid made her third consecutive start at goalkeeper and recorded 13 saves.
Viterbo amassed 41 shot attempts and limited the Warriors to just three shots. Seventeen shots were on goal for the V-Hawks and Waldorf finished with one shot on frame.
Junior Melanie Chandler registered the only shot on goal for the Warriors, who also received shot attempts from sophomore Sammie Ginsberg and senior Cassidy Ogden.
Waldorf entered conference play with momentum, but saw its two-match winning streak come to an end at the hands of the V-Hawks. The Warriors look to rebound during homecoming week as they host Grace University on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
