Top 10 movies in the library not available on Netflix
By Andrew Larsen
Libraries are usually known for books and maybe a magazine or two, but did you know the Luis V. Hanson Library has some amazing movies as well? The best part is, they’re free to rent. So I bring to you the top 10 movies you can rent from the library not available on Netflix.
10. Avatar
Avatar was released in December of 2009. This action-adventure movie has grossed over 750 million dollars since its release. Avatar also won three Oscars including Best Achievement in Visual Effects and Best Achievement in Cinematography. The movie was directed by the master mind of James Cameron who has directed other movies like Titanic and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The movie is about Jake Sully, a wheelchair bound marine who is ordered to the moon of Pandora. He then is ordered to a unique mission where he eventually has to choose between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.
9. The Jurassic Park Trilogy
With Jurassic World just being released this summer and becoming one of the highest grossing films ever, I had to put this trilogy on the list. Pick up the original Jurassic Park trilogy all in one package. Directed by Steven Spielberg, these classics will bring you back to your childhood and once again you can enjoy an iconic film. If you don’t know what this movie is about I can explain it in one word, dinosaurs.
8. School of Rock
Jack Black makes this movie what it is, a fun comedy everyone can relate to. Jack Black plays Dewy Finn who is a middle aged guy, who just got kicked out of his own rock band and now must struggle with becoming an adult. Eventually Dewy steals a substitute teacher job from his brother at a strict private school without him knowing. But instead of teaching math and science he teaches these kids how to rock and to just go for it.
7. Moneyball
This Oscar nominated movie was released in September, 2011. The movie features actors like Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. The movie follows the life of Billy Beane, General Manager for the Oakland A’s, as he tries to turn the club around by using analytics to buy and sell certain players in order to earn a better record and defeat the system as a small market team.
6. Guardians of the Galaxy
The Marvel movie that came out of nowhere and stole everyone’s heart in the summer of 2014 is available at your library. Five unlikely heroes team up to become the Guardians of the Galaxy as they further the plot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This movie has one of the best soundtracks of all time and it made you fall in love with a tree that only says “I am Groot” the whole movie. Not to mention Chris Pratt does amazing in this break out movie role as Star Lord the eventual leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
5. The Shawshank Redemption
The Shawshank Redemption is a classic movie released in 1994. This movie is simply one word, amazing. Morgan Freeman does an amazing job in this movie and it is considered, by many, as one of the top 250 movies of all time. The tagline for the movies says everything you need to know about it, “Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.”
4. Thor: The Dark World
The 2nd movie in the Thor saga was released in November, 2013. Chris Hemsworth reprises his role of Thor as his love interest Dr. Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, is taken control and cursed by a powerful object. Thor must protect Jane and this object before a powerful enemy and his enemy try to take it and use it to take control of the rest of planet Earth. Thor the Dark World provides lots of comedy and action only a Marvel movie can provide.
3. The Lion King
That’s right, The Lion King! This movie will have you singing Hakunamatata for the rest of the week. Follow Simba as he gains the courage to reclaim his home land of Pride Rock. Arguably one of the best original Disney movies ever, the Lion King sings its way into the #3 spot on our list.
2. Saving Private Ryan
Saving Private Ryan is one of the most powerful depictions of WWII. This amazing movie is directed by the genius Steven Spielberg and features Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, and even Vin Diesel. After the Dday landings, Captain Miller, played by Tom Hanks, and his team must risk their lives and go behind enemy lines to rescue Private Ryan because all of his brothers have been killed in the war already. One of the best war movies of all time.
1. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
You’re seeing that correct. The whole Lord of the Rings Trilogy is our number one and all three movies are available at the library. Frodo Baggins has been trusted with the one ring of power and must travel to Mordor to drop the ring into Mt. Doom. In this three part fantasy adventure, you will meet many characters and have many different story lines to follow. But there is no arguing the Lord of Rings trilogy is one of the best cinematic master pieces to this date, and opened the door to the fantasy saga and what it stands for.
That rounds out our top 10, but there are tons of other movies I wish I could’ve mentioned so here is a short list of others to try and rent: Captain America, Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Nightcrawler, The Terminator, Taken, Game of Thrones: Season 1, 2, 3 and 4. That’s right there are even TV series you can binge watch. So make sure to check out the library movie section and rent as many movies as you want for up to a week at a time. You might be surprised with what you find.
