The Waldorf College Theater Department will be performing The Diviners, written by Jim Leonard, Jr., as the first show of the 2014-2015 season.

The story is about a young mentally-challenged boy, Buddy Layman, played by Tony Wise Jr., who has an interesting relationship with water. When C.C. Showers, a pastor who has lost his calling, played by senior Phil Detrick, stumbles into town, the town tries to convince him to re-establish the church. Buddy and C.C. eventually develop an interesting relationship which culminates in an unexpected ending.

The Diviners is “an interesting take on the idea of society and what our roles are in it,” said Director Dr. Robert AuFrance. AuFrance chose this show hoping that the audience will walk away thinking about who they are and the fates they have to meet.

Freshman, Willie Kreitlow said he’s had a great time being in his first college play and is excited about his part as a simple minded farm hand, Dewey Maples.

“It’s going to be a show to remember, so everyone should come see all the new faces in the theatre department,” said junior, Sydney Hutchison. Hutchison plays Goldie Short, an outspoken owner of the town’s café.

Show dates are Oct. 1-4. Performances will be held in Smith Theatre. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the play begins at 7:30 p.m. nightly. Order tickets early for best seats. Tickets can be reserved online or by calling the box office at 641-585-8585.
