Strong Effort on the Ice Falls Short

The Waldorf Warrior hockey team played against the Iowa State Cyclones over the weekend. The game started with the high expectations after bouncing back from a tough 0-6 loss the night before.

“We battled hard, stuck to the systems and adjustments the coaches gave us, and we got the bounce we needed to force overtime. Not the result we wanted but still a step in the right direction” said Nick Farkas, a sophomore defenseman for the Warriors.

The Warriors started the game strong, proving they had worked out some of the mistakes from their previous game. They were well prepared while competing against one of the powerful teams of Iowa. At the end of the competitive first period both teams were tied, 0-0.

However, in the second period Iowa State’s Ray Zimmerman broke the deadlock. The game’s score stayed at 1-0 until forward Kaden Hintz scored the Warrior’s first goal of the season with assistance from Farkas.

The 1-1 tie sent the teams to a five minute overtime period. In the first minute the Cyclones scored, deflating the crowd’s hopes and ending the game.

 “I felt good, although we lost the game,” said German forward Janeck Sperling, the youngest player of the team. “I had just finished my first college hockey weekend.”

“It was a neck and neck the whole way through,” says Nadia Turner, a freshman who attended the hockey game. “Overall it was a great test for the Warriors.”

The Warriors’ next test will be on home ice at the Albert Lea City Arena against Mayville University at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 4.
